We have always been clear about this: CASTING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. But let’s face it: in some forums, it was still ‘that thing’ that happens between the script and the shoot, remaining in a somewhat invisible limbo. That’s why we’re so thrilled that the Oscars have finally created a specific award for best casting and that, on the first shortlist in history, there’s a Spanish film, ‘Sirat’, featuring the work of our beloved María Rodrigo (along with the rest of the casting team). HASHTAG PROUD.
This new Oscar comes after years of pressure from the guild to level up casting with disciplines such as cinematography and editing, and will debut at the 2026 ceremony, with millions of eyes on names that were previously in the shadows. The fact that Oliver Laxe’s ‘Sirat’, already nominated for Best Casting at the European Film Awards, is competing with giants such as ‘Hamnet’, “Sinners” and ‘Wicked’ shows that Spain’s talent for creating bold and coherent casts is unquestionable.
We confess that this news excites and inspires us: hopefully the Goya Awards will take note and be encouraged to recognise at home what Hollywood is already celebrating for the first time. It is a reminder that we know how to choose, take risks, defend real diversity and honest work… And that a good cast changes everything.
